Project Maya

ShivaMaya has ventured into urban slums and rural villages to launch Project Maya, an initiative to extend a helping hand to those women who have to juggle work with their families and often don’t get access to basic health and hygiene. We aim at implementing a multi-faceted approach which attempts to improve the lives of these women by introducing programs which will spread awareness about, and ensure better access to, health and sanitary products, and also set up vocational training centers which will enable them to earn better wages under safer and more conducive working environments.

We launched our inaugural vocational training program in Kolkata, providing free beautician courses for marginalized women from around the city. Our goal is to give these women practical, hands-on training that will enable them to immediately find well-paying employment in a field that is perpetually in demand of skilled workers. Our staff includes expert, professional beauticians who not only train these women, but also work just as hard to find positions for them once they've finished their training. With this success in the city, ShivaMaya is seeking to provide similar training courses in the rural areas elsewhere in West Bengal.

Project Maya is an ongoing effort. With the help of our wonderful volunteers, we have introduced our flagship programs in the rural areas of Hooghly and Birbhum by means of awareness workshops, but there is still plenty of work ahead of us. By extending our outreach programs beyond Kolkata's borders, ShivaMaya is ready to continue improving the lives of India's impoverished, no matter where they live.
